At Scotby CE School, we are committed to promoting British Values which were defined by the government in 2011.
Democracy
Democracy is the means by which the people choose their government by voting.
At our school, we develop an understanding of democracy by offering pupils a broad range of knowledge and experiences. Our PSHE curriculum supports this and children learn of democracy through Historical Figures and Historical Periods, Our Global Citizenship work also develops an understanding through units on 'Power and Governance' and 'Social Justice and Equity.'
We encourage pupils to become involved in decision-making processes and ensure that they feel listened to. Our Pupil School Improvement Team acts as a voice for the pupils in making our school a better place to be. Its members are democratically elected by their classmates.
Throughout their time here, pupils learn to articulate themselves politely and with confidence and they learn to explain their views.
The Rule of Law
The Rule of Law is the principle that all people are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced.
We have high expectations of pupil behaviour as reflected through our Core Values and also our Behaviour Policy. We ensure that our Behaviour Policy is applied consistently and with fairness. At the start of each academic year, we spend time establishing class routines and rules and revisiting our Core Values in a creative and whole school manner.
Through our Global Citizenship work and PSHE, pupils develop understanding of law and justice. Our older pupils always enjoy visits from local magistrates.
Individual Liberty
Individual liberty means each of us having the freedom to make our own choices.
Through PSHE and our Core Values, pupils are taught how to stay safe and make good choices. Online Safety lessons are taught each year with regular reminders throughout the year. Children learn about rights and responsibilities.
We encourage children to follow their interests in a range of extra-curricular activities such as sports, lego, puzzles, art, origami, music and cooking.
We have a strong anti-bullying culture and children participate in carefully planned lessons and activities within PSHE, CORAM Workshops and during Anti-Bullying Week.
Mutual Respect
Mutual Respect is the understanding that we do not all share the same beliefs and values. We should respect the values, ideas and beliefs of others and not impose our own on others. It is the foundation for honesty, trust and meaningful conversation.
Pupils are taught to respect each other and look for similarities whilst celebrating and understanding differences.
We allow opportunities for children to celebrate their uniqueness and also to listen to other talk about their beliefs and cultures and family situations.
Children learn respect through RE, PSHE, Our Core Values and the way in which we all treat each other at Scotby CE School every day.
Tolerance for Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Tolerance can be defined as a willingness to recognise and respect the beliefs and practices of others.
Through our RE curriculum, pupils learn about different faiths and beliefs. They learn to respect other faiths, no faith and different cultures and lifestyles.
Pupils discuss differences between people such as faith, ethnicity, gender and different family situations. Kindness and Respect are Core Values at Scotby CE School and we demonstrate these every day.
